Healthy Minnesota Day

This Wednesday, Sept. 18 is Healthy Minnesota Day as part of President Gabel’s week of inaugural activities. She is sending the message to us and to all Minnesotans that healthcare is a priority at this land-grant University. Which means that if you—the practitioners, educators, policy-makers, and researchers in clinical care of all kinds—could attend one or both of the events that day, it would send the message that we are excited, engaged, and ready to serve.

From 11:00 to 11:40 AM, there will be a healthcare focus at the weekly Wednesday Farmers Market on the grassy plaza just south of the McNamara Alumni Center. There will be booths from OACA centers - including the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Community-University Health Care Center, Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility, and the Masonic Cancer Center - as well as representation from M Health and M Physicians. And there will be health-focused activities like yoga, Qi Gong, and trying to keep up with Goldy. As a bonus for your wellbeing, representatives from Pet Away Worry and Stress (PAWS) will also be there.

So you can perhaps catch a glimpse of our new president, do some networking and stretching, and even have the opportunity to relieve some stress.

At noon, you can get some additional exercise by hurrying over to Northrop Plaza for the Student Mental Health Forum moderated by MPR’s Stephanie Curtis. If you only have time to participate in one event, I would ask that you go to this one, both to learn from the discussion and to support our students.

If you are absolutely tied to your desk, this event will also be live-streamed.

President Gabel’s inauguration gives us a chance to re-examine what we do in the light of new leadership. She is showing support for us, and we want to show support for her.

Thank you,

Jakub Tolar, MD, PhD
Vice President for Clinical Affairs
