Enhancing Maternity Care in Rural America: Clara Busse named Health Equity Postdoctoral Fellow

Clara Busse grew up in a small town in Michigan, frequently accompanying her dad, a family doctor, on house calls to patients who couldn’t make it to the doctor’s office.

"I saw firsthand how getting health care to people in small towns and rural places requires unique approaches," she said.

The experience inspired Busse to focus on providing maternity care to people living in small towns and rural areas.

Although many resources are available to those living in cities, the Rural Health Research Center at the University of Minnesota discovered that 56% of rural communities in America do not have access to obstetric care. As a Rural Health Equity Postdoctoral Associate through a joint initiative from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Office of Academic Clinical Affairs, Busse will work on projects related to maternal health and maternity care services for people in rural areas.

Busse is most excited to collaborate with the team at the Rural Health Research Center to answer pressing questions about policies and programs intended to improve the lives of rural residents. In the future, she hopes to lead mixed-methods research studies that direct efforts to improve the perinatal health care system for rural Americans, and in her own words, "So that all people have the resources and support they need to be healthy before, during, and after giving birth."
