One of the great privileges of working in academic health care is knowing that our efforts extend far beyond the tasks of any given day. Every patient we care for, every learner we mentor, every discovery we advance, and every colleague we support contributes to a larger mission of improving lives. At the University of Minnesota, that shared commitment to service, innovation, and excellence connects us to one another and to the communities we are privileged to serve.
The world around us continues to evolve at a remarkable pace. New technologies emerge, healthcare needs change, educational expectations shift, and the demands on our time seem endless. In moments of uncertainty, it can be tempting to focus on the challenges before us. Yet those same moments offer an opportunity to reconnect with the deeper purpose that brought us to this work in the first place.
But uncertainty should not be a signal to pause; it is a call to look beneath the surface. Now is the time to do more than just recall our purpose—we must elevate it. Elevating our "Why" is a promise to expand the horizons for our patients, families, and the communities we serve. It is the internal conviction that our work matters, acting as an anchor that keeps us from drifting when the surrounding environment feels unsettled.
This elevation doesn't require a grand gesture. More often, it happens in the micro-moments woven throughout our days. We see it when we take those extra five minutes to truly hear a patient's concerns, when we encourage a learner who is finding their footing, or when a research team uncovers a new insight that moves a field forward. These moments remind us that even as the landscape changes, our impact remains constant. By recognizing and celebrating these small victories, we build the collective resilience needed to navigate larger challenges.
None of us has a map that reveals every turn ahead, but we do have a compass. Our values guide us. When we remain grounded in our mission while embracing change, we create space for innovation, collaboration, and progress. When we invest in the development and well-being of our faculty, staff, and learners we strengthen a culture that fosters excellence, mentorship, and discovery.
I challenge you today to reflect on the values that guide your work. What is the purpose that motivates you regardless of external circumstances? What is the "Why" that remains constant, even when everything else seems to be changing?
Uncertainty is temporary, but our calling endures. When we elevate our "Why," we do more than navigate change—we inspire others to do the same. Together, we can continue raising the bar for what is possible in healthcare, education, and research, and in doing so, create a healthier future for the people and communities we serve.
