“Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” - Theodore Roosevelt

For 175 years, the University of Minnesota has advanced education, research and health across our state. That legacy reflects generations of faculty, staff and learners who embraced new ideas, addressed difficult challenges and remained committed to serving Minnesota.

Today, as higher education faces financial pressures, shifting enrollment patterns and changing workforce needs, we have an opportunity to build on that foundation. Our resilience is rooted in our shared commitment to the University’s mission and our ability to adapt as we continue serving Minnesotans for generations to come.

The Reality of the Moment

Universities across the country are reassessing how they operate as financial pressures and changing demands challenge traditional models. Academic healthcare is also evolving as patient needs, workforce demands and the healthcare landscape in Minnesota change.

These challenges require careful planning and an openness to new approaches. By examining how we work and where we can improve, we can make better use of our resources while keeping our focus on the people and communities we serve.

Anchored in Legacy, Built for Lasting Impact

Our 175-year history demonstrates what can be accomplished when people commit to a shared purpose. As a public land-grant university, our responsibility is to build on this foundation and ensure the University continues to make a meaningful difference across the state.

We have opportunities to strengthen how we educate learners, support student success, advance research and deliver care. Reviewing our budgets and priorities will help us identify where we can work more effectively while continuing to support the people and programs central to our mission. Some changes will take time and investment, but thoughtful planning can help us direct resources where they will have the greatest impact.

Resilience is reflected in how we respond to challenges and how we prepare for what comes next. It grows when we share ideas and recognize the contributions of those around us.

The University of Minnesota’s history gives us a strong foundation, and its people are central to its continued success. As we look ahead, I am confident in our ability to draw on that expertise, make careful decisions and continue advancing our mission. Together, we can build on 175 years of achievement and ensure the University remains a source of education, discovery and service for Minnesota for generations to come.
