Dental student Blair Kreh and medical student Anna Van Deelen are working with Trellis and the School of Dentistry to provide education for dental professionals on how to best work with patients with dementia. They are in the final stages of creating modules that will offer accessible education for providers looking to enhance their skills in dementia care.
The team enjoyed learning about the importance of including all stakeholder perspectives when addressing community care. They found it rewarding to see how community members approached the same problem in a variety of ways. The pair shared that the fireside chats and project summary meetings were valuable opportunities to connect with their peers interprofessionally, stating, “It’s a unique opportunity to spend time with and learn from peers in other professions.”
The dementia population faces significant oral health disparities, especially those who are residents of long-term care facilities. Through the internship, the team gained a strong foundation in equitable health care practices, which they will continue to build on throughout their careers.
