This past fall, the Center for Interprofessional Health (CIH) welcomed its inaugural cohort to the Affiliate Faculty program. This one-year program brings together health professionals to engage in one or more designated areas of interprofessional interest, including teaching, practice, research, and innovation.
The cohort includes two community clinicians and nine faculty members from the University's Duluth, Rochester and Twin Cities campuses. They represent nine professions, including bioethics, dental hygiene, medical lab sciences, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, and psychology.
Affiliate faculty members meet monthly with a small group of colleagues to learn about each other’s activities and CIH programmatic efforts, including the WILD Series and the IPE Scholars Program.
“I’ve enjoyed the chance to learn more about the vision CIH has and how they are enacting it. Furthermore, I have learned a lot from other members of the program and how they apply interprofessional education in their work,” said cohort member Daniel Paley, PharmD. “I work in a very busy emergency department and precept a student rotation there. The students are often nervous about incorporating themselves into the health care team, so I plan on using knowledge gained through the Affiliate Faculty program to help my students integrate into interprofessional teams.”
Cohort member Amy Haynes, DPT, PT, says, “I have enjoyed getting to share my expertise with students and help them understand the importance of interprofessional cooperation, and how it directly affects patient outcomes. I enjoy talking and meeting with a variety of people, as well as the professional connections I’ve made through the Affiliate Faculty program.”
“The Affiliate Faculty Program exemplifies the key interprofessional education principle of learning with, from and about colleagues from a wide range of professional backgrounds. For example, two participants in this year’s cohort—one from dental hygiene and one from nursing—discovered a mutual passion for studying synchronous development of professional identity alongside interprofessional identity,” said Sasha Zagoloff, PhD, LP, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and CIH co-lead for faculty/preceptor development. “Affiliate faculty members interested in teaching have jumped with both feet into the many teaching opportunities organized by CIH, including Better Together, Community Teacher and Escape Rooms. Those interested in research are actively collaborating with colleagues from the National Center and our CIH leadership team on large-scale and innovative interprofessional education data sets.”
